Back-to-School Health

Ready, Set for a Safe & Healthy School Year

It’s that time of year again — as kids get ready to return to school, families face changing routines and growing lists of to do’s that can seem overwhelming. Our CVFP Health Team is here to help with resources and tips on how to prepare for a safe and healthy transition back-to-school.

As your family gears up for the school year, remember to take time out to plan for your children’s health. This can include health screenings, vaccination updates, nutrition planning, and conversations on topics from safety to mental health. Talk to your CVFP Health Team for support and check out these resources:

Start with Your Family’s Back-to-School Health Checklist. You can download this list and add your own “checks” for what is most important for your family.

Information on injury prevention and safety, nutrition, mental health, sexual health, and growth and development is available here.

For kids with asthma, September’s return to school can be tough with sick days and even hospital stays.

Canadian researchers have found that the September back-to-school period brings a dramatic increase in illness and hospitalizations for children with asthma. This period is now recognized as the September Asthma Peak. Source: Asthma Canada.

To help ensure that your child with asthma stays healthy this September:

  1. Schedule an asthma check-up with your CVFP Health Team

  2. Speak with your child’s school about their asthma policies

  3. Help your child understand their asthma

Take some time time to think about what the return to school might look like for your family. It’s important to talk about any concerns or worries about going back-to-school and to keep those conversations going throughout the school year. It’s also important to check-in regularly with teachers. Staying connected with the school gives you an opportunity to work together as a team to ensure the best possible school experience for your children.
